Flowers bring us together

We all value flowers, what they represent and how they give us joy. They can also bring families or communities together marking special events. Queens Gardens is one place where this happens all the time. The next time you visit this park why not try and spot the various trees marking such occasions?

With the rose the national flower of both England and Bulgaria, it was great to meet up again with members of the Bromley Bulgarian group in celebration of the roses they donated and planted late last year. They installed a plaque to mark this, as well as taking the opportunity for watering and feeding the roses. It is sincerely hoped that they will flourish along with our various communities.

The Bromley Bulgaria group hope to arrange a further event in Queens Gardens later in the year.

Friends of Bromley Town Parks with Cllr. Aisha Cuthbert (centre) with new flag

At a brief ceremony earlier today (18th August) in Queens Garden; Cllr. Aisha Cuthbert, along with Friends members, and representatives of idVerde, celebrated this national award for the fourth year running.

Despite the current drought, and other pressures this park has been maintained to the high standard required for this award, due to the hard work of the local idVerde team.

The Green Flag Award scheme seeks to raise the standards of public parks & green spaces. In England this scheme is run by the Keep Britain Tidy group.

Royal Connections

Queens Garden off Kentish Way, as the name suggests, has royal connections. The former White Hart Field was donated for a public park to commemorate the 60th year of Queen Victoria’s reign in 1897, and officially opened in 1900. Since then the anniversaries of our present sovereign continue to be marked, this time in trees!

Planted to mark the 70th anniversary of reign of Queen Elizabeth II

Over the years Bromley council have planted a tree to mark various royal milestones. Those for 1992, 2002, 2012 and of course 2020 can be found here, along with one for the Queen and Prince Philip’s wedding anniversary in 1997. Each tree has a plaque recording the event.

There are also others commemorating other non royal events. So the next time you visit Queens Garden why not see what you can spot!

Queens Garden: Green Flag Award

Last Wednesday Queens Garden, adjacent to both The Glades and Kentish Way, was inspected by an expert from Hillingdon council, to confirm that it continued to be up to the standard required for the award of a Green Flag. While we await his report, all concerned remain confident. If successful this park would have obtained this award for a fourth year running. #GreenFlag #idVerde

Flag Pole Reinstated

New flag pole in Queens Garden

In November our new flag pole was installed at the Kentish Way entrance of Queens Garden, after a long campaign. This replaced an earlier one located nearby, now occupied by the Children’s Playground, which was redeveloped along with several small restaurants in what used to be part of the park. To celebrate this we were able to raise our Green Flag awarded for 2021/2. This was the third year in a row this park was successful. We will soon be aiming for this valued public green space, right in the town centre, to again be recognised in this manner.

Green Flag Award is a national award, a quality mark for parks & green spaces – and is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Its criteria are –
