Storm damage in parks

As a result of recent very high winds many trees were blown down, including some in our Bromley Town Centre parks. Three were toppled and one badly damaged in Church House Gardens. A smaller tree in Library Gardens was also blown down. Due to the hard work of the council tree team and their contractors, any obstructions have been removed. However it will take some time for foliage, where necessary, to be removed from site. In most cases these trees were blown over, despite being bare of tree leaves, due to the evergreen ivy growing on them allowing the wind to find purchase.

While bad news, it is hoped that other nearby smaller trees will eventually grow to take their place.

Queens Garden looking great

This flower bed in Queens Garden, previously the “Darwin Bed”, is looking very good at the moment. It includes various plants, including several attractive grasses, from around the world. This was replanted, by idVerde staff, a couple of years ago to replace the earlier flower scheme which had been part of Bromley council’s iff-fated application for World Heritage status for the Downe area associated with Charles Darwin.

With the other flower beds in the garden currently still awaiting the summer bedding to be planted, this is the main flower display in this park. We hope soon see their contributions to the beauty of this well loved space.

Perhaps with the gradual easing of coronavirus restrictions it will not be too long before the customers of Cafe Giardino will be able to gaze down upon this attractive scene. However in the meantime we can all enjoy this, and the rest of this garden’s attractions, from ground level.

Dogs in our parks

IMG_2665

While it is great to see responsible dog owners walking their pets in nearly all of our parks, there are some areas in which dogs, other than assistance dogs, are unwelcome. This is to ensure that in these ‘dog free’ areas wildlife, along with people, especially young children, can remain safe. For example children can get an infection from dog waste left on the grass that they play on.

Such ‘dog free’ areas are; Church House Gardens (part) and Queens Garden. The entrances to these areas are clearly marked (as in above image). Sadly in a very few cases irresponsible dog owners ignore such restrictions and deliberately take their dogs into these areas. So doing they risk the well being of children and other park users and a possible £80 fine.
