Glassmill Pond is Blooming

In the recent sunny weather the plants have certainly grown! What was bare earth a couple of months ago has now been covered by green foliage, amongst which are a few attractive flowers including Purple Loosestrife (above) and Great Willowherb (below).

The remaining plants are much less showy, but still important.

With the recent lack of rain the river channel, while extremely low is still flowing.

We look forward to continue monitoring the site, and how it develops in the coming years.

Foxglove tree in flower

Foxglove tree (Paulownia tomentosa)

With the recent loss of a favourite old tree (Holm Oak) it is good to see a young tree showing itself off nearby. This is the Paulownia, also known as the Foxglove Tree due to its large mauve bell shaped flowers. These come out before the leaves, and make a lovely sight at this time of year. This particular specimen is located near the Church Road entrance to Church House Gardens. There is another much older tree elsewhere in the park, but it wonky has a few flowers on it.

The trees in Church House Gardens are well worth looking out for. So why not see what you can spot when you next visit?

Spring arrives on College Green

After a very wet March spring has arrived on College Green. While the daffodils are now ending flowering, tulips and hyacinths are now taking their place. Also our newly planted flowering cherry sapling was in bloom. Their colours cannot help but lift our spirit and encourage us to celebrate our local parks.

Queens Garden looking great

This flower bed in Queens Garden, previously the “Darwin Bed”, is looking very good at the moment. It includes various plants, including several attractive grasses, from around the world. This was replanted, by idVerde staff, a couple of years ago to replace the earlier flower scheme which had been part of Bromley council’s iff-fated application for World Heritage status for the Downe area associated with Charles Darwin.

With the other flower beds in the garden currently still awaiting the summer bedding to be planted, this is the main flower display in this park. We hope soon see their contributions to the beauty of this well loved space.

Perhaps with the gradual easing of coronavirus restrictions it will not be too long before the customers of Cafe Giardino will be able to gaze down upon this attractive scene. However in the meantime we can all enjoy this, and the rest of this garden’s attractions, from ground level.
